Pupil Premium Policy

Mission Statement

This policy aims to outline how we will spend our Pupil Premium Funding to ensure that our mission to be ‘Dedicated to Excellence’ is accessible to all. At Up Holland, students entitled to the Pupil Premium are identified in September and a strategy is written based on the identified needs/ barriers of the students. The interventions run from September to July. Throughout the year, the strategy is reviewed, the impact evaluated and when necessary, refinements are made. The Up Holland strategy for Pupil Premium focuses on three areas:
Inclusion in school life
The Inclusive phase of support for Pupil Premium is based on ensuring that all disadvantaged students can access and take part in school life fully. These strategies are personalised to each student but can include the following general actions:
• Support for equipment and materials to attend school.
• Music Tuition.
• Support with any transportation issues.
• Access to the internet and technology, to support learning both within and beyond the school environment.
• Support to raise levels of literacy and numeracy with one to one and small group teaching and support where appropriate.
• Staff are fully aware of students’ needs and any issues that could prove to be barriers to progress.
• Additional support to access extra-curricular activities to provide a full educational offer.

Supportive phase

The Supportive phase for Pupil Premium is based on ensuring that all disadvantaged students have access to a pastoral system that meets their social, emotional and behavioural needs in order for them to become well rounded individuals that are well prepared for the next stages of their lives. The following are examples of strategies that can be used to support individual students:
• Pupil Premium students are mentored by their Personal Development tutor.
• Access to a counsellor.
• Access to additional literacy and numeracy, if below expected levels of progress.
• Access to inspirational and aspirational opportunities in the form of speakers and guest mentors to the school.
• Opportunity for high quality CEIAG and additional support.

Intervention phase

The Intervention phase for Pupil Premium is based on ensuring that all disadvantaged students achieve their academic potential. Intervention is personalised to the needs of the students and can take the form of the following strategies:
• One to One and small group literacy and numeracy support.
• Phonics intervention
• Use of IDL reading package
• Accelerated Reader intervention
• Access to study facilities, computer rooms and school library.
• Homework club.
• Smaller group intervention and support strategies throughout Year 10 and 11.
• Access to after school intervention
• Access to holiday revision sessions
• Access to the School led tutoring programme
• Access to transport to enable attendance to out-of-school hours sessions.

The progress of Pupil Premium students is monitored after each school assessment point and regular progress updates will be shared with the Governing body.

Roles and Responsibilities

Through careful use of this additional funding, the school is fully committed to ensuring that the
individual needs of each entitled child are met. As a result of the additional funding, the school aims to diminish the difference between the attainment and progress of Pupil Premium and non-Pupil Premium pupils.

The Headteacher and the Lead for PP are responsible for implementing this policy. They are committed to ensuring that all staff are aware of their roles and responsibilities in diminishing the difference. They will ensure that all staff are given the relevant support and professional development opportunities to enable the acceleration of progress of Pupil Premium students. The importance of diminishing the difference as one of the school’s priorities, will also be reflected through the Appraisal system.

The Headteacher and Lead Practitioner for PP will:

• In consultation with Governors and SLT, decide how the Pupil Premium is spent for the benefit of those pupils entitled to it.
• Monitor, evaluate and review the impact of Pupil Premium funding.
• Report to Governors, outlining provision, progress made in diminishing the difference and evaluating the impact of the strategies used.

The Governing body will:

• Ensure that the school complies with legislation regarding Pupil Premium funding.
• Monitor and evaluate the work of the school in relation to Pupil Premium, taking into account the information provided by the Headteacher and quantitative and qualitative data.

Teaching and Support Staff will:

• Maintain the highest expectations of all pupils and promote the school’s ethos of ‘Dedicated to Excellence’.
• Maintain a ‘Quality First’ approach to Teaching and Learning which enables the acceleration of progress.
• Take part in professional development opportunities and keep up to date with research regarding diminishing the difference.

Through the process of self-evaluation, the school will continue to seek to develop further strategies and interventions which can improve the progress and attainment of students.
